Raby Castle 🏰

ad| Raby Castle is one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England, but stepping inside truly feels like walking through history. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family, it has seen centuries of stories unfold within its walls—from royal connections to rebellion and restoration.

On a private tour with Lord and Lady Barnard last week, I was lucky enough to be taken through both the grand rooms open to the public and the hidden spaces still being carefully restored. From the opulent drawing rooms and the magnificent dining hall to the servants’ quarters with worn rugs and well-used maid bells, every corner tells a story.

I loved the details that remain—old maps, handwritten letters, newspapers, and relics of daily life still in place. The kitchen, with its wrought iron stoves and copper pans, gives a glimpse into the work that went on behind the scenes and the ovens that were actually made in Newcastle. The chapel, the library, and the grand bedrooms reflect the legacy of those who lived here over so many generations, there were even a few family feuds thrown in.

Lady Barnard is putting so much of her own time, care and attention into it, and described the restoration as “a delicate balance of touching up what is already there and keeping the original wear, markings, and history to preserve the castle and its story”—and that’s exactly how it felt. Stepping inside Raby Castle isn’t just a visit—it’s an experience of the past that is still alive today.

🎟️ Raby Castle is officially reopen for 2025, 7 days a week. Tickets include access to the castle, Deer Park, and Walled Gardens—more on that to come!

🏰 Really worth a visit especially if you’ve not been before, this was my first time inside the castle too.

January & February have been long and aside from a jaunt around the world to China I’ve been a homebody, living life on the doorstep, enjoying the little slow things. I’ve read 7 bloody books in 3 weeks man what’s going on?!

@tiny_tiny_newcastle do it and I don’t think I can go back to basic ever again it was really good.

I did wish I was sat in the main room though in the sunlight rather than against the wall in the back room that’s a bit dingy, and was piled high with dishes and clutter so ask for a table in the other one.

It is dangerous how close this is to me,a lunch break game changer.

The Northern Rye bakehouse is where they make all of the products that go to their shops. You can see everything being made by the team of bakers, as well as pick up your own order from the counter - including fresh sandwiches and toasties.

I resisted the pastries and went for a cheese and caramelised onion sourdough toastie it was divine! 🤤 it’s dog friendly as well Arthur enjoyed the attention.

I was asked if I’d create a North East reel using this folk song as the soundtrack.

Written and performed by local writers and musicians - it’s called ‘Minstrel Michaela’ and is about a man who lives in the countryside and one day meets a female travelling musician. She stays a while to write some songs inspired by the nature around her, then moves on, leaving him wondering if their paths will ever cross again.
