How To Prepare For Your First River Cruise

A river cruise offers an immensely rewarding way to see a succession of amazing destinations over
the course of a single short trip. From quaint little fishing villages to ancient, soaring cities, the right
river cruise can provide it all
. But before you set out, you’ll want to ensure that you’re prepared for the
trip.

Properly research your cruise

To begin with, you’ll want to make sure that you research your destinations thoroughly. Make sure
that you understand exactly what’s being offered by the company, and that you vet it thoroughly.
Online reviews can be a critical source of information. Bear in mind, however, that the most important
factor to consider is your own personal taste. If you’ve always wanted to visit Germany, Switzerland,
and the Netherlands, then a Rhine river cruise might be the best way to go.

Understand the itinerary

Before setting out, you’ll be given a list of locations, along with the time you’ll get there. This will allow
you to plan your activities for each day. Scout out the major attractions and the best places to eat. It
might be that you only have a couple of hours at each stop, and so being efficient will allow you to get
the best from the break.

Decide what to pack

Generally speaking, your packing list will be determined by the parts of the world that you’re cruising
through. In mainland Europe in summer, lightweight clothing might be desirable. Norway in winter
might require more layers. Aboard some cruise ships, you might be expected to dress formally (or, at
least, semi-formally) for some special occasions, like the evening meal. Check whether your cruise
ship has a laundrette service. If it does, then you’ll be able to pack lighter and reuse your clothes.
Holiday essentials, like sunblock, sunglasses, hats, toiletries and medication are all just as worthwhile
on a cruise ship. Make a packing list and use it.

Ensure you have transfers

If you need transfers between an airport and the boat, then you’ll need to make sure that they’re
included with the price of the cruise. If they aren’t, then you’ll have to make your own arrangements.
You’ll need to meet the transfer guidelines of the cruise ship, which typically means arriving early and
notifying them of any delays. If you don’t have all of this sorted, then you are almost guaranteed a
stressful experience, as you rush around in search of alternative means of getting to the ship.
