A Dog-Friendly Stay at Gisborough Hall & A Look At Their Luxury Shepherd Huts
If you’re on the lookout for a memorable staycation in North Yorkshire that caters to both dog lovers and those craving luxury, Gisborough Hall offers the best of both worlds. Located on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors I enjoyed a stay here in the summer to experience the dog friendly rooms, and take a look at their brand new luxury shepherd huts.
Disclaimer: I was invited to Gisborough Hall for a complimentary stay in a dog friendly room, as always all opinions are my own. I’d happily pay for a stay in the shepherd huts!
Gisborough Hall itself is a beautiful country manor hotel, very traditional with drawing rooms, a fine dining room, an outside terrace and bedrooms. The Gisborough Hall new luxury shepherd huts opened for bookings summer 2024, and although they aren’t dog friendly I was given a guided tour – spoiler – they’re stunning! Here’s everything you need to know about both experiences.
A Dog-Friendly Stay at Gisborough Hall
For those travelling with furry friends like I often do with Arthur, Gisborough Hall provides a warm and welcoming option. The dog-friendly rooms are spacious and conveniently located on the ground floor right by the car park, making it easy for quick access to outside. My room had a lot of space, and dog bowls were also provided.
Being close to the car park it was easy for me to bring in all our stuff, there’s always more with a dog in tow, and the car park had dog bins too which was great. Dogs aren’t actually allowed in the main public areas of the hotel, but they do allow you to leave them in your room and they provide a ‘dog in room’ sign to hang on the door.
During my stay, I was having dinner in the bistro, the less formal option compared to the proper dining room service and I left Arthur in the room while I went. I use a pup cam via my ipad so I could keep an eye on him, but if you choose not to leave them you could order room service instead.
My bistro dinner was really good, it was hearty food and the portions were massive! I had the calamari to start followed by pasta, and I had to skip dessert because I was so full. For breakfast i decided to have that as room service, and you put your order in the night before for them to bring to your room. I love hotel breakfasts but this was great when I was on my own with Arthur as I could still enjoy it without having to leave him in the room again.
The hotel grounds are perfect for leisurely walks, with plenty of greenery to explore, and set back off the main road it was very safe. On sunny days, the terrace is an ideal spot for a drink while soaking in the stunning views and dogs are allowed out there.
In general, Gisborough Hall is an excellent base for trips to the North Yorkshire Moors, and the Yorkshire coast including places like Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and Whitby. For dog owners wanting to explore these areas, it’s an absolute win in terms of convenience and comfort.
Luxury Shepherd Huts at Gisborough Hall
While the dog-friendly rooms were perfect for my stay with Arthur, I was invited to take a look at the new Gisborough Hall shepherd huts. They have put so much time and effort, as well as no expense spared into the three huts that were complete this year, and it really shows.
They aren’t your typical shepherd huts—each one is double the size of what you’d normally expect and is packed with features that make them stand out as a glamping option for anyone who enjoys the home comforts. Despite being bigger than your average shepherd hut, they were bright and airy for summer, but will be so cosy in the autumn and winter months.
I toured the hut called Pheasant, and was thoroughly impressed by the attention to detail, and what the additional space allowed for inside the hut. Usually everything is in the one room, but it was almost split into two areas, one with the fully equipped kitchen area and a living space with seating, log burner and small table. This is very unique for shepherd huts, not many have this and would be delightful to curl up in with a good book.
The bedroom area had a double bed, and a feature copper bathtub, as well as a skylight, providing really great features to enhance your stay and make it a bit different. The en suite bathroom was beautiful, and another unique feature I haven’t seen before – wardrobe storage space and full length mirror.
The outside space included a seating area with a fire pit, as well as a private hot tub, making the huts a dreamy option for a romantic or relaxing getaway. Each of the huts has allocated parking in the car park, it’s just a small walk along to where they are in the field, and they have cycle storage too.
The Gisborough Hall shepherd huts currently aren’t dog-friendly, but there is one that is family friendly with enough space for kids too. The huts are positioned close to one another, but they’re designed for privacy, especially around the hot tub areas.
If you’re staying in the shepherd huts, you still have full access to the hotel’s facilities, including the restaurant, bistro and bar, so you don’t have to travel far for food if you did choose to eat out.
