A City Centre Stay at NE1 Luxury Apartment, Newcastle
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the centre of Newcastle, you really can’t get more central than the brand new NE1 Luxury Apartment Newcastle at the top of Grey Street. Just steps from Monument, the Theatre Royal, Eldon Square shopping and everything that Newcastle has to offer, this apartment is not only in a prime spot, but it’s been fully renovated to a gorgeous luxury level.
Disclaimer: I received a one night complimentary stay for the purposes of a review.
The entrance to the apartment building is 93A Grey Street, which is the big glass double doors next to Societe cafe and bar. The building itself might be old, but it has plenty of character up the wrought iron stairways and old windows, or you can take the lift.
The apartment itself is really secure, you have to go through three keypad entry codes to get access so it’s very safe. The key exchange is contactless with a keysafe by the door.
Inside it’s just beautiful, really warm and welcoming with so much more space than what you might imagine for a one bed city centre apartment. The hallway leads you down to the open plan living area, where you have two big sofas, coffee table and an entertainment area.
The TV is controlled by an ipad, there’s music, wifi, Netflix etc so all modern luxuries. I spent a good few hours chilling here watching TV and catching up on some work before I went out in Newcastle that night. Despite being so central it’s very quiet, I couldn’t hear any noise from the Christmas market going on down on the street below.
There’s a lovely piece of artwork on the living room wall, a hand painted image of Newcastle, similar to the view you’ll see if you look out of the window. The view is over Grainger Street, one of the oldest and prettiest areas of Newcastle city centre.
The kitchen is open plan too, fully refitted with everything you might need, and a dining table and chairs, coffee machine, fridge and fully equipped. It’s an ideal space for getting ready and enjoying the apartment as more than just a place to sleep if you’re in Newcastle for a specific event.
You could get Deliveroo or any number of takeaways with it being so central, with space to eat in the kitchen, or if you’re heading out it’s ideal for popping a bottle and having some drinks before you go with the music on.
I thought it was a bit cheeky to get anyone to deliver me food considering how close I was to literally everything, but if you needed to if you’re in a rush or just in the apartment relaxing then of course you could. I went out and brought some food back in while I was getting ready to go to the Tyne Theatre.
The bedroom and bathroom have both been done out to match the modern feel of the whole apartment, with fixtures around the huge comfy bed, and a dressing area with a light up mirror, hairdryer and so much wardrobe, drawer and additional storage space.
Again, perfect for getting ready to go out even in the winter months, that mirror is a dream. There’s USB sockets everywhere for charging, and a TV in the bedroom too. The bathroom is stunning, with a rainfall shower, Molton Brown toiletries and fluffy towels provided.
It really is a gem in the heart of Newcastle, and I can’t think of anywhere similar. Most of the self-catered apartments or aparthotels are down on the Quayside, and anything this central in town is likely to be quite old and dated. They’ve done an amazing job of turning it into a modern, beautiful living space so close to everything in this part of Newcastle.
Despite being a one bed apartment, it does sleep four as one of the sofas in the living room is a sofa bed. I think it’s usually expected that this would make it really cramped and you’d lose the living space, but the room is so big that it wouldn’t impact on your space too much if you did pull it out.
I can see it being a hugely popular rental especially for people visiting Newcastle for Christmas shopping – on your doorstep, the football at St James – 10 minute walk away, the arena or events on the quayside. It’s about a five minute walk from Central Station, there are some of the best bars and restaurants in Newcastle in under 5 minutes walk – literally on the same street. If you were getting the metro in its steps from Monument, or driving the nearest parking is just down the street on Dean Street.
The best bit for me was being able to go back there at the end of my evening out. It felt so safe and there was no battling for an Uber or waiting for taxis and metros.
I met the owner and his partner, and they are both such lovely people. They’re really keen to make sure everyone has a great stay and loves the apartment as much as they do after all of the effort they’ve put into renovating it. They’ve stayed there themselves while they’ve been doing it, so they’ve had time to think of everything.
