Meet Me On The Corner For Festive Afternoon Tea
Meet Me On The Corner was one of Whitley Bay’s newest openings in 2022, a family run business on one of the corners of Ilfracombe Gardens. The gorgeous little cafe has gone from strength to strength over the last few months, with new additions being added to their menu all the time – Sunday roasts, cocktails and seasonal dishes. For Christmas, they’ve just launched their festive afternoon tea.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary afternoon tea – but I’m frequently a paying customer
The cafe is decorated for Christmas to get you in the festive spirit, and the afternoon tea comes served on those cute little ladder stands, with so much food so make sure you go hungry. You’ll get the menu on your plate, and as you need to pre book there’s no need to go up and queue at the counter to order.
Starting with the savoury options, these include a turkey and cranberry sandwich, and a smoked salmon crostini. Both make a nice change to the usual afternoon tea style finger sandwiches.
There was also a Geordie banger sausage roll – you can’t go wrong with them! I knew I’d never have room for the rest of the afternoon tea if I ate this so I saved it and took it home with me, and had it for lunch the next day and it was just as fresh and delicious.
Moving on to the scones, it comes with the two classic options you’d expect, cheese with salted butter and fruit with jam and thick clotted cream. The cheese one was served warm so the butter just melted into it – gorgeous.
Deserts are in my opinion where the Meet Me On The Corner festive afternoon tea really shone. I can never finish a full thing so I always end up taking some home, but I dived straight in for the Bailey’s cheesecake as it comes served in a little glass pot I didn’t think they’d want me stealing.
This cheesecake was phenomenal. You can just tell it’s homemade, so thick and creamy with a crunchy biscuit in the bottom, and little gold flecks on the top for a Christmassy look. Everyone loves a Bailey’s at Christmas, and this was just amazing – by far my favourite bit of the whole thing which is unusual for me as I’m more of a savoury girl.
As well as the cheesecake the other desserts are a festive flapjack, which was so gooey, and a triple chocolate brownie. I ate so much of the cheesecake I also brought these away with me to have with a cuppa the next day. But I did polish off the Christmas Rudolph mini macaroon.
Drinks wise you can choose from a classic breakfast tea or an Americano coffee, and as they’re a licensed cafe you can also pay a small fee to upgrade and have prosecco with it too.
There is a kids’ version of the afternoon tea, which serves ham and cheese sandwiches, a gingerbread teddy, festive school cake, cookie dough brownie and a hot chocolate.
Of course the MMOTC cocktail menu has had a sprinkle of festive cheer too, as some Christmas cocktails have been added. You could easily go for afternoon tea and stay on through the afternoon to get through them all. Choose from a Jack Frost gin slushie, a mistletoe martini and a chai spiced white Russian. Who doesn’t love a Christmas cocktail?
The Meet Me On The Corner festive afternoon tea is available from Wednesday to Saturdays from now until Christmas, between the hours of 2-4pm. You’ll need to book in advance as they’re a popular spot and you’re unlikely to get a table otherwise, especially on weekends and the closer it gets to Christmas.
You also need to make sure you book 48 hours in advance so they can get all the ingredients for the demand. You can let them know if you have dietary requirements and they do gluten free options too.
It’s £20pp for the adult festive afternoon tea, £10pp for the kids version, and if you want to upgrade to include prosecco there’s an additional £5 charge. For the quality of the food being made so fresh, and you get a lot of it, I think this is one of the best value for money afternoon tea you could have this Christmas, especially at the coast.
They’re dog friendly so you could have a coastal walk before heading along, or even do some shopping on Park View before you visit, there’s some brilliant independent businesses and some gorgeous Christmas window displays.
A day out in Whitley Bay rounded off with a Meet Me on the Corner festive afternoon tea sounds pretty good to me – get it planned and booked in the diary while they have availability.
