🏰 Wray Castle, Ambleside

Sitting on the shoreline of Lake Windermere, Wray Castle is a National Trust property just a 15 minute drive from Ambleside town centre.

🏰 Free to visit inside and there’s a photography exhibition on the ground floor, and a second hand bookshop in the study
🚗 the car park is NT so if you aren’t a member you need to pay it’s about £6 for two hours. It’s a big car park but even on a non school holiday weekday lunchtime it was full so maybe go early
🌳 spot the Mulberry tree in the grounds that William Wordsworth planted
🧺 lots of picnic benches to take a picnic
🐾 dogs allowed just not inside the castle itself
⛰️ gorgeous views over the lakes
🐿️ plenty of walking trails through the woodland grounds and down to the lake shore
☕️ Joeys cafe serving coffee and snacks

A perfect Lake District cottage…

Ad|📍 Coach House 1, Pullwood Bay just outside of Ambleside

In all my years of multiple visits to the Lake District and particularly Ambleside I can’t believe this estate was right there just 5 minutes outside.

@coach_house1 as the name suggests sits in the coach house building of the estate, the quaintest little cottage with everything on hand for a very comfortable Lake District stay. It has full access to the entire 51 acre estate, including a stretch of Lake Windermere shoreline and private jetty.

🛌 2 bedroom sleeping 4 across a double and a twin, they can also provide a cot
🛁 family bathroom with bath
🛋️ open plan living, dining and kitchen area - so cosy but still plenty of space
🪵 log burner which will be fab in cold Lake District winters
💻 wifi, smart tv
🐾 dog friendly
🌳 small outside terrace seating area
🚗 space to load and unload the car but plenty parking opposite in the car park for all coach house properties
🛶 10 minute walk or few minutes drive to the lakeside and jetty where you can swim, paddleboard, kayak or boat launch (with arrangements)
🐿️ so much wildlife to see
🥾 some lovely woodland walks on the estate, you can also get to Wray Castle from here a 1.5 mile walk through the estate
📍 a 6 minute drive to Ambleside and Waterhead if you enjoy a coffee run or dinner out

I didn’t want to leave it was perfect, peace quiet and the great outdoors on your doorstep but very close to the nearest town so the best of both worlds. A great one for if you’ve not been to the Lakes much before and don’t want to go to rural.

Coach House 1 is also owned by the same owners as @bay_cottage_cullercoats so you’re in local hands! Managed and bookable through @lakelandretreatsuk ⛰️

Kiln brunches ☕️

Let me tell you sitting outside for brunch when we get the weather for it hits different. Kilns outdoor terrace is the perfect spot for it.

They serve brunch daily from 10-3pm or 4:30 on weekends and you choose a meze platter to share followed by an egg dish of your choice from the likes of shakshuka, scrambled or Turkish for £20pp. Or you can just have a single dish for £13. My shakshuka had a right kick and was lovely 🍳

Weekend bookings are advised but i walked in at 10am and got a table outside.

If your weekends are planned around food then i’ve said it before and I’ll say it again the Broad Chare Sunday lunch takes some beating.

A few new things on the menu including rhubarb oysters which were delicious last week, and the beer garden is back open for a drink before or after. Total sun trap! ☀️🍻

See The Fighting Temeraire - only until September!

ad| Turner’s famous ‘The Fighting Temeraire’ painting is in Newcastle at the @laingartgallery as the centrepiece of an exhibition that celebrates art history and nostalgia - all of which are brought together on Tyneside. I was invited to the unveiling last week to see it.

🖼️ On loan from the National Gallery to celebrate its 200 year anniversary, the painting itself is the last journey of the naval vessel, and the two tug boats that pulled it were manufactured here on Tyneside.

Other paintings and photographs in the exhibition also show that local industry and history- Wallsend shipyards, Hebburn & Jarrow coal mines, and scenes of the working River Tyne.

💷 You might recognise it from James Bond - Skyfall, Bond meets Q sitting in front of it, or the back of our £20 pound notes.

🚊 Jump on the @my_metro - an official partner of the exhibition and enjoy the convenience of the gallery just a few minutes walk from Monument.

🎟️ Full price tickets are £5, concessions £4. Free for 21 and under. Really worth a visit even if you don’t usually like art!
