Blogmas: Inspiration For Winter Spa & Hotel Breaks For January 2022
I book a January weekend away every year, obviously with the exception of last year, as I just need something to to look forward to after the long boring month at the start of the year. After suffering such a rubbish deal last year, hotels and spas are releasing their offers and winter packages early. I’ve done this post a few times in the past as offers change every year, so if you’re looking for a winter spa and hotel breaks at the start of 2022 you’re in the right place.
I’m sure you won’t need much convincing, but it’s just so nice to have something to look forward to especially if you’re detoxing or doing dry January. After the chaos of December and the festive season, January can seem really dull. I’ve never regretted a winter spa or hotel break yet, where there’s no pressure, you can stay cosy inside and just enjoy good food and being looked after. A spa is an added bonus, but isn’t the be all and end all. This list will cover a mix of spa hotels and non spa hotels.
I find that booking now is a lot better, as once we get past Christmas Day people look to next year and start booking. It can really reduce availability and I have struggled when leaving it too late in the past. Bookings now can also involve just a deposit, or pay when you stay which is quite sensible at the moment.
North East Winter Spa & Hotel Breaks
All but one of these hotels have a spa, and the one that doesn’t has private hot tub rooms anyway. They are all within an hour ish drive of Newcastle. We do have some lovely choices not too far from home!
South Causey Inn
This place is top of my list, especially after I visit it for their Christmas market last week. I’ve wanted to go for a while and I think this one might be the one for me this year. They have themed rooms with private hot tubs, they’re dog friendly, they also have normal hotel rooms and new apartments that look incredible. My sister says the food is really good, and I just really liked how rustic and unique it was. It’s a good time to sign up to their emails as they’re doing a daily email advent of offers, but they also have packages and offers on site here too.
There is a dedicated January blue offer that you can find here.
Walwick Hall Hotel and Luxury Lodges
In rural Northumberland near Hexham, Walwick Hall is a gorgeous Georgian House. The rooms are so comfortable and the food is some of the best I’ve had at a hotel break like this. They have a spa, where you can get treatments or just enjoy the pool with the views. Enjoy the local area if the weather allows, with Sycamore Gap, and Hadrians Wall nearby. If not just enjoy sitting by the fire and relaxing, maybe a spa treatment or two.
Chesters Stables are very close by, which are self catered cottages sleeping between 2-8 people. They are pretty expensive but they look incredible, and some of them are dog friendly.
They have offers for Friday and Sunday stays, dinner bed and breakfast, or food offers. View the Walkwick Hall offers here.
Headlam Hall
Headlam is a 17th Century country house, that is family owned in the Durham Dales. They have sprawling grounds, a golf course, a lovely spa and rooms both in the main house and the spa building. I’ve enjoyed quite a few spa days here, they have an outside hydropool a full range of treatments and the option to stay.
They have a dedicated winter escape offer, as well as some general offers to take advantage of.
Seaham Hall
I’ve enjoyed spa days and twilight spas at Seaham in both summer and winter, as the outdoor infinity pool and jacuzzis can be used year round. The spa is huge, so you can always get treatments and you can keep your robe and slippers on in the restaurant. If you want to learn more about the Twilight spa experience have a read of my blog post here.
I’ve never stayed over or been in the main house, but it looks stunning and it’s definitely on my list. View the full range of Seaham Hall offers here.
Rockliffe Hall
Always one of my favourites Rockliffe Hall is lovely and luxurious, with lounges warmed by the fire, the beautiful Orangerie where you can enjoy dinner, breakfast and afternoon tea, a very good spa, a golf course and fabulous rooms in both the new and old hall. They also have some self catering cottages in the grounds that allow dogs now too, so hopefully we will get to take Arthur at some point next year.
Rockliffe Hall have a big range of offers, that include everything from a 3 for 2 night winter break, to an Apres ski private rental of the spa garden, winter golf offers and a lot more. Browse the full range of Rockliffe Hall offers here, there are some really good ones.
Ramside Hall
One I’ve never actually been to, but Ramside Hall is obviously very popular in the North East. They’ve added some new accommodation options recently, including the new luxury tree houses and coming soon the new A frame glass fronted lodges. They look like they’ll be ready early 2022 so not sure you’ll get in January until they release more information.
Ramside Hall also have a big range of offers that cover everything from stays and dining, to spas and golf breaks too. Browse all Ramside offers here, and even just a hotel booking is 15% cheaper if you book direct.
Redworth Hall
I was meant to stay here last winter but due to lockdown it got cancelled, hopefully I’ll be able to rearrange as I’ve not yet stayed here either. They promise Great British Breaks and GBB is the code for discounted stays during January 2022. Redworth Hall Hotel is a 17th century Manor House in County Durham, and included big grounds, fitness and spa centre and a well recommended restaurant.
Have a look at the Redworth Hall offers here.
Rudding Park
I am desperate to visit here it looks beautiful! A luxury hotel in Harrogate the spa looks incredible, they have a private cinema, 2 golf courses, gardens and 2 restaurants. No wonder they’ve won a fair few awards. Have a look at the videos on the website because it looks stunning in winter, I’d definitely want it to snow. It’s not cheap so an offer is the way forward, and you can find the Rudding Park offers for stays, spas and more here.
Slaley Hall
Slaley Hall is another popular option for the North East, and I love visiting in winter because it’s so homely. The mulled wine is amazing! I’ve not actually been in the spa since it was revamped a few years ago, but Kieran’s played the golf course a few times. It’s also dog friendly, and close to Hadrian’s Wall.
Slaley Hall have quite a few Christmas packages they’re promoting, but you can browse the spa offers here.
Beau Monde Spa
I’m including Beau Monde spa in Lucker because although it’s not a hotel and you can’t stay over, the day spa is gorgeous and really affordable. If you need a relaxing day but don’t have the time to do a full overnight trip then check them out. Read my full experience of the Beau Monde spa here.
Scotland
If you’re wanting to head up to Scotland then I have a few suggestions for winter spa and hotel breaks up there, based on my few stays that have always been in the Autumn or winter months. I did a press trip to the Scottish Borders last September and loved both of the hotels I stayed in there.
Schloss Roxburghe
This one was my favourite, not far from Kelso. It’s very peaceful, with roaring fires and unbelievable food. A great one to visit in winter you can read my full review of Schloss Roxburghe here. There currently isn’t a spa but they are adding one, it’s just a lovely place to switch off and relax.
Find all Schloss Roxburghe offers here.
Cringletie
Cringletie was the other hotel I stayed in on my trip, but it’s in Peebles which is just 35 minutes from Edinburgh. It’s a bit quirky and more of a boutique stay, I had a really good nights sleep here and the breakfast was amazing. They have a lovely walled garden, and it’s very secluded among beautiful scenery. I had a glass of wine sat in one of the turrets by the fire.
They have a winter escape offer available to book, as well as a few others here.
Cathedral House Hotel
We stayed at the Cathedral House Hotel in Glasgow just before the pandemic hit last year in February. I’d never been to Glasgow before, but I really enjoyed staying here rather than one of the chains. As you can probably guess it was by the Cathedral, which was slightly further out than the centre but our room was gorgeous, the staff were so nice and friendly, and I’d definitely go back. You can read my full review of Cathedral House Hotel here. Again it’s not one with a spa and it’s a city hotel so more one for a city break than a relaxing break.
Have a look at the different rooms and stay options on the Cathedral House Hotel website here.
Kimpton Blythswood Square Glasgow
I didn’t stay here when we went to Glasgow but we did eat here in the female led fabulous restaurant Bo & Birdie. I really loved what I saw of the hotel, and then I saw that @dog.aboot.toon went and it’s dog friendly too. I’d love to go back to Glasgow and stay here, it looked stunning. We had drinks at the bar with Billy Connolly too. Again it’s a city break so not relaxing but this hotel would be lovely stay.
Find more about it here.
The Lake District
I usually do a separate blog post on winter spa and hotel breaks to the Lake District as there is so much choice, but these days I find that I’m always drawn to the same ones. There are just a couple I haven’t stayed at but really want to, and I know people who have been and recommend. The Lakes is a bit further so you’re looking at a 2-2 and a half hour drive from Newcastle, but it’s always worth it.
Armathwaite Hotel & Spa
This was the last January spa hotel break we went on back in January 2020. We got a good deal for a session in the spa, dinner and bed and breakfast. We booked too late so there was no availability for treatments, but we spent all afternoon in the infinity pool outside drinking wine instead. Read my full review on the Armathwaite Hall here.
Armathwaite Hall has stay and spa offers you can find them here.
Low Wood Bay
In a beautiful spot overlooking the lake, and just outside of Ambleside this hotel is in a stunning spot. You can see the steam coming from the outdoor pool when you drive past. A really good location and the hotel looks beautiful, a few people I know have stayed here very recently and have recommended. You can also enjoy the delights of Ambleside too, one of my favourite towns in the Lakes.
Low Wood Bay have a seasonal offer on until the end of February 2022, a Sunday offer, and you can sign up for others direct on site too. View the offers here.
Brimstone Hotel
Brimstone Hotel is just impossible to get booked for, as it’s so amazing. On the Langdale estate at the moment you can only get in the Brimstone Spa if you’re staying in the hotel, so it is very private. It’s also expensive and I can’t see any offers on so you’re looking at a pricey bill. The spa is possibly one of the best I’ve ever been to, it’s just gorgeous. Read my full review of the spa here.
Full details on the Brimstone Hotel website here.
Mirefoot Cottages
This isn’t a hotel it’s a self catered cottage complex made up of 5 cottages about 25 minutes from Ambleside, but I’m including them as we had such a great week long break with them in 2020. The cottages are gorgeous, very modern and are all different from each other. The two best things about them aside from how nice they are inside are that they’re dog friendly, and they have a spa on site that you can reserve for private use during your stay.
I’d love to go back here, read my full review here.
Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa
I can’t believe I’ve not actually stayed here yet, as it’s a firm favourite of both my parents, and it’s where my sister got engaged and spent a few days on a mini moon here too. The outside spa views look breathtaking, and I’m told the spa rooms are beautiful.
Lodore Falls have a few offers on, including a winter escape, flexible stays and others. Find them all here.
I’m not sure where I’ll book for January 2022 just yet, probably somewhere that is dog friendly so we can take Arthur. I usually wait and share this post in January but at the moment with international travel still a bit up in the air (no pun intended), places are booking up a lot earlier and I’m not sure there would still be availability if you wait. The more I think about it the better it is to book early, I’m already needing a break from being so busy and we’ve only had one weekend of December so far. If you have any suggestions for winter spa and hotel breaks that I’ve not included let me know – always like to find new places!
