A Night Out ‘In One’ at Swingers Crazy Golf Bar

When I was told by my London based friends to meet them at ‘Swingers bar’ my initial reaction was ‘whattttt?!?!’. Nothing would surprise me to be fair, I was meeting the girls I went to Vegas with, but it turns out ‘Swingers’ was actually ‘Swingers Crazy Golf bar’ and just a few minutes from the Heron Tower, right by the gherkin.

When I got there it was basically a black door, with a doorman, and a yellow neon ‘Swingers’ light above it. Approaching what basically looked like a smokers back door I had no idea what I was going to find but thought ah sod it and just went in. You go downstairs and are met at the bottom by the host at the desk. The place transforms from rustic, dingy stairway to a really cool attractive bar and you can sense the atmosphere as you get to the bottom of the stairs. For a Monday night at 5pm that’s not bad I don’t think! I explained to the lovely host that I was meeting friends and would just wait by the bar. She directed me through and I perched myself at the far end of the exposed brick and copper bar, and ordered a mojito. £9 which isn’t too bad either compared to Newcastle.

The girls arrived, we went through the usual ten minutes where I had to repeat everything I said cause they find the accent so hysterical and ordered some drinks. What we did find was that the barmen perhaps aren’t the most experienced. They could make what was on the menu but one of the girls asked for a recommendation of something sweet and they were clueless. Anyway, once we all had drinks in our hands we moved through to eat.

The eating area is a casual corner of the bar with picnic tables and a numbered ticket system. It reminded me of the secret pizza place in the Cosmo, Vegas too. Greasy pizza that tastes delicious but in the most contrasting setting. The picnic benches, a chalk board menu and number board with your order that flashes red once ready, were all to compliment the golf theme. The food is quick and easy, served on paper plates, or in cardboard boxes with plastic knives and forks. I was starving and quite happy with that and stuffed my face. Maybe I got a bit carried away actually one of the barmen brought me over some napkins without being asked haha! Well who can be arsed cutting up pizza seriously?

While we were eating we put our name down for crazy golf. This is why it’s called Swingers! It’s crazy golf/food/bar all rolled into one. Behind the bar are are two nine hole crazy golf courses, both slightly different but the general idea is the same. We got our time slot and host JJ went through the rules. No more than six shots each for each hole, don’t whack it too hard, and generally have a laugh.

It was so much fun! As you walk around each hole there are waitresses on hand to order drinks and cocktails, which they bring over to you while you’re playing. The drinking doesn’t stop just because you’re playing golf. We had such a laugh and there’s even a bar at the ‘tenth hole’ for when you’ve finished too.

There were a lot of couples doing it, and I imagine it would be a really fun date night bar, especially in winter. You can literally do everything in the one place. It was a Monday night so it wasn’t too busy, but by the time we left the queue to play golf was massive, and the queue to get in and past the cloakroom was up the stairs. If you’re thinking of trying it out, early in the week and not too late in the day is definitely the way to do it.
