Holiday Homes & UK Breaks With Availability For August Bank Holiday

I am seeing a lot of people struggling to book anywhere this summer, and with Spain flights now being cancelled, and prices rocketing for any UK break it might feel like you’re destined for another bank holiday at home. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but I totally get the desire to get away somewhere over the only bank holiday we can really make the most of. So, I have pulled together this list of Air BnB’s, holiday homes and UK breaks with availability for the August bank holiday.

Keswick Reach

When reading through this please note that unless I specify otherwise, all prices are for Friday – Monday so the full weekend. I’ve done this on purpose to give the maximum total cost, but also to make sure they have full availability across the weekend in case you want to pick and choose specific nights. I haven’t stayed at all of these places, I’ve just researched in general what is available as a starting point for you to do your own research.

I’ve began with Air BnB entire homes, in the North East, Yorkshire and Cumbria so a maximum of two – two and a half hour drive from Newcastle. The second section covers holiday homes via Booking.com as some people aren’t keen on using Air BnB, and the final section are hotel stays across the three areas too.

Air BnB Entire Homes

For these I have picked out some of the ones that look the best, although there are some that look like no frills but good as a base for the locations. There are plenty superhosts in here too with good reviews. I’ve had good experiences with Air BnB so far, but please fully research if you like the look of any of them as I have only done brief checks based on what is available and stands out to me personally, but I haven’t stayed at them.

North East

Stable Cottage in Acklington near Amble. 2 adults for £253 which includes 20% off. Details here.

Hazon Burn luxury lodge in Swarland, sleeps up to 4 adults and by then should have a hot tub. Access to a golf course. £570 for all of the Bank Holiday weekend. Details for Hazon Burn here.

The Cottage at the Coach House, a barn annex next to the main property that you get to yourself. Near Ponteland for 2 adults £263.

Runhead Forge is a 2 bedroom Air BnB that sleeps up to 4 adults in Ryton. It looks quite cute and for the whole weekend is £415.

Westview Cottage looks a lovely country cottage in Hexham, it has 2 bedrooms so up to 4 guests and is £409 for the bank holiday weekend.

Fontburn Cabin in Northumberland is a luxury 2 bedroom lodge with a hot tub. It sleeps up to 4 guests but is a bit pricier, at £993 for the weekend.

The Granary – don’t laugh when I tell you this is near Barnard Castle. A cute cottage that sleeps two, £389 for the weekend.

Yorkshire

There are actually quite a few Air BnBs available in North Yorkshire, but I’ve picked out some of the ones that stood out to me at first glance. There are a couple in the centre of York that look lovely, and although seem expensive they are cheaper than hotels in York that’s for sure.

The Thoresby – this apartment looks amazing, and is in the centre of Leeds. It only sleeps 2 people but it looks beautiful and a good city base. £416 for the weekend.

Cobbler’s Cottage – a very cute place for 2 people with outdoor patio, £351 for the weekend.

The Cottage in York is very modern, perfect for a 2 person getaway. Great location and £392 for the full weekend.

Harrogate apartment – 1 bedroom apartment in the centre, £288 for the weekend

This one is a bit crazy, it’s an eco earth house called Faun Lodge in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Sleeps 2 and is £409 for the weekend.

Studio apartment in York – quite small but riverside, 1 bedroom and £373 for the full weekend

Apartment in Ilkley – a cute little town this apartment is part of a house renovation, but is fully private. For 2 guests £333 for the weekend

Mill Cottage is quite small and more like a studio, it has 2 single beds but is a countryside base with a waterfall. £491 for the weekend.

The Granary – another cottage in the city centre of York in a perfect location. 1 double bedroom for £433 for the full weekend.

Entire Properties via Booking.com

If you aren’t comfortable with Air BnB’s but would prefer a holiday home to yourself rather than a hotel then here’s a handful of holiday homes available via booking.com instead.

North East

The Gatehouse in Belsay – this is one of my favourites it looks quite quirky. Sleeps 2 adults and is £369 for the weekend.

Stable Cottage in Bardon Mill is a 2 bedroom house that sleeps up to 4. £339 for bank holiday weekend

Highridge Apartment in Wooler comes with a garden, sleeps 2 and I think it looks so cute. £255 for the weekend with free cancellation before 20th August.

Lavender Shepherd Hut in Stamfordham, sleeps two. It’s available for the bank holiday at £545 but is non refundable. It looks dreamy though!

Mole Cottage in Stocksfield. Simple but looks nice and is pet friendly. £360 for the weekend.

Gin Gan Cottage in Ryal, sleeps 2 people. £305 for the weekend.

Haggerston Castle caravan – a 3 bedroom caravan with onsite bar and kids play area. £453 for the weekend.

Timberwick Green in Wooler, sleeps 6 across 3 bedrooms (one is bunk beds), and has an on-site fitness centre. It looks like a cosy cottage. £845 for the weekend.

Lobster pots in front of holiday homes in Craster

Yorkshire

There are quite a lot of entire homes available in York and Harrogate via Booking.com, so it’s worth a search yourself but again I’ve picked out a few that stood out to me.

Harrogate Lifestyle Luxury Apartments – there are a few available from studios to two bedroom places. They go up in price with size obviously but start at £215 for the full weekend.

Hidden Gems of Harrogate apartments – more expensive but they do look lovely and start at £562.

Bootham Crescent Apartments in York all look to be 2 bedroom apartments so might be good for a group or family. Prices start at £369.

Glamping in York – these two person pods have some availability left from £170 for the weekend.

Marine View apartments in Scarborough. A popular seaside town I spent many childhood days on the beach of Scarborough with my grandparents. 2 people for £403.

The Lake District

I’m struggling to find many with availability for just the weekend, but Keswick Reach Lodge retreat do have some 2 bed luxury lodges available from £479, with hot tub. I have stayed here and had a great time, you can read my review here.

Hotel Breaks

Finally on to hotel breaks. The prices may seem high for these, but please note I’ve searched for the full 3 nights so prices I’ve mentioned are for the whole weekend. If you prefer one or 2 nights it will obviously be cheaper and most are actually very reasonable for one night. I searched for the full 3 nights to cover the full weekend.

North East

Amble Inn – I’ve stayed here and it was great for the dog friendly rooms, I also enjoyed the breakfasts. Between £317 – £377 depending on room size.

Slaley Hall – 4 star hotel with spa facilities and 2 golf courses, prices from £371 for the full weekend.

Doxford Hall – Chathill 15 mins from Alnwick, luxury country house with spa facilities. For the full weekend prices for 2 from £511

Matfen Hall – luxury country house in a beautiful setting, I’ve not been to stay but I have been for a few events and to do Go Ape which is in the grounds. Prices start from £482 for the full weekend.

Go Ape Treetop Challenge at Matfen Hall

Langley Castle – stay in a real 14th century castle, there is only 1 room left for 3 nights but may be more availability for individual nights. For the full weekend for 2 it’s £574

Eshott Hall – near Morpeth Eshott Hall is beautiful and perfect for a luxury stay. For the weekend prices start at £392

Walwick Hall Hotel – I’ve stayed here and it is so beautiful, the food was excellent. This is the only one where 3 nights aren’t available so the price for Sat – Sun of bank holiday starts at £260. Here’s my review.

Warkworth House Hotel in the lovely town of Warkworth. £357 for 3 nights.

The Sun Hotel Warkworth – right by Warkworth Castle I have stayed here and loved it, for the full weekend for 2 adults prices start at £341

The Dyvels Inn, Corbridge – a good one to explore Corbridge, and I love the little homeware shop next door. For the weekend prices start at £420

Walwick Hall
Walwick Hall

Yorkshire

Jorvik House – 5 star hotel in York with a lot of character, £378 for 3 nights.

Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate gets a lot of good reviews. The cheapest non refundable room is £199 but there are quite a few other options available.

Ascot House in Harrogate is family run and I like the sound of the home cooked Yorkshire breakfast. Prices start at £267

Indigo Hotel York – I’ve heard good things about the Indigo boutique hotels, and this one in York has good availability for 3 nights from £381

Just a short walk from Betty’s the Harrogate Majestic certainly looks it, a Hilton hotel with gardens and spa prices start at £267 for the weekend.

If you want to go all out then The Grand 5 star hotel in York, with luxury extras, city centre location and spa starts at £437 for 2 for the full weekend.

I’ve had food at The Black Horse Inn near Northallerton before and it is a lovely country pub. The food was excellent, and they have rooms available for 3 nights from £347.

The Lake District

I’ve got to be honest when looking at the Lake District hotels they are pricey, and there isn’t much availability for the ones I know and love after years of visiting the Lakes. There are guest houses and B&B’s available, so it’s worth a search. Here are a few that either I have stayed at or family have, that do have availability but will cost a fair bit. Again please remember I’ve searched for 3 nights unless otherwise stated so costs will be cheaper for one or two nights.

North Lakes Hotel & Spa – located in Penrith and they have a swimming pool and spa, 4 star luxury starts at £390 for the full weekend for 2.

I stayed at the Armathwaite Hotel in January and it was so nice, you can read my review here. There is a minimum of 2 nights stay over bank holiday and the cheapest I can find is £640 from Saturday – Monday.

The Salutation in Ambleside is in a great spot for one of my favourite towns in the Lakes, but for 2 nights it’s a minimum of £350.

The Langdale Hotel is beautiful, with a lovely Leisure complex onsite and a good base for local walks. One night over the bank holiday is a minimum of £250.

Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa looks stunning, and is a firm favourite of my parents. It comes with a price tag of at least £474 for 2 nights.

Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat

If you are looking to get away this coming bank holiday, and I don‘t blame you with it being the only one of the year we can make the most of properly, I hope you manage to get something sorted. As I said previously please do your own research especially for the Air BnB’s as I haven’t stayed in any of those, so it’s always worth making sure you check for everything you need yourself.
